A Kayak-Umiak is the motif on the eighth coin in the ship series.
On 29 November 2010, Danmarks Nationalbank issued a new 20-krone coin with a Kayak-Umiak as its motif. The Kayak-Umiak coin will be issued in an edition of 0.8 million coins in ordinary circulation.
The kayak originated in Greenland almost 4,000 years ago. It used to be essential in the life of the Inuit, who used it for hunting seal, etc.
The umiak, with women at the oars, was the means of transportation in the summer season. The umiak was filled with children, summer tents, utensils, and sometimes dogs. It would return in late summer heavily laden with game and winter provisions.
The motif for the new ship coin was designed by the sculptor Niels Motzfeldt, who has created a fine relief with a Kayak-Umiak at sea. The same artist previously designed the motifs for the "Three Brothers" and "Polar Bear" coins.
Run the mouse over the image and check the coin details. To turn the coin kept the left mouse button down while you drag the mouse over the image.
